Although paddy cultivation has increased for the past three consecutive years, the area traditionally cultivated through organic farming continues to decline. This year the area has fallen below 2% of the total paddy crop for the season. In addition to its efforts to improve the numbers by organizing awareness campaigns, distributing seeds at subsidized rates, etc., the Department of Agriculture took responsibility for growing traditional varieties in its own campus and harvested Success. He opted for Kichadi and Thuyamalli samba and raised them on five acres in the village of Neikuppai Pudhur during the samba season.

Speaking to TNIE, Murugesan, co-director of the agriculture department, said, “Following government orders to promote organic farming, we have undertaken traditional paddy seed cultivation on a five-acre plot at the seed farm in Neikuppaipudhur village through organic methods.We got an average yield of 2.2 tons, which is higher than that grown by the conventional method.After the certification department processed the seeds, these would be distributed to farmers for planting in the next samba season.He added that 10 acres have been adopted for traditional paddy cultivation in the coming season.

Vadivel, agriculture manager responsible for the seed farm, mentioned that the organic method was more profitable and very productive. “In the conventional method, you have to spend an average of 25,000 acre to get at least two tons of yield. But through the organic method, 1.75 tons to 2.2 tons can be obtained,” he said. , adding that they took a line from activist ‘Nel Jayaraman’.

The seed farm has served as a model for traditional organic farming with farmers from various villages visiting the place to learn about methods, get technical advice and seeds.

After his visit to the seed farm, S Rajagopal, a farmer from Peruvappu village in Lalgudi, said, “It is a great joy to see crops grown with minimum cost and less effort. The yield is also significantly higher using this method. I decided to resume the traditional culture by organic methods.”

Talking about the organic method, Vadivel said that before the plowing process, green manure seeds are used to enrich the soil. Fertilizers such as Panchagavya, Meen Amilam and Neem cakes are used. “The soil does not require any other special nutrients for its growth. In addition, traditional varieties are best adapted to climatic conditions,” he added.

It should be noted that Vadivel received a certificate from the district administration in recognition of its efforts in promoting traditional paddy cultivation during the Republic Day celebrations. “In the last three months, I became a farmer and personally visited the farm daily to manage all the work there,” he said.
