Mexican Organic Food Supplier Achieves ROC® Certification

Campos Borquez, a year-round supplier of organic and regenerative superfoods, has become the first farm in Mexico to achieve Regenerative Organic (ROC) certification, a milestone for the company.

Campos Borquez is the first farm in Mexico to obtain Regenerative Organic (ROC) certification.

“My family was part of a group of pioneers in a valley that hosted Dr. Norman Borlaug’s research for the Green Revolution; maximizing yield to have enough food for a rapidly growing population was at the heart of sustainable agriculture for my parents’ generation,” says Pablo Borquez, CEO of Campos Borquez. “Times have changed and our role in the history of sustainable agriculture is defined by the vision and guidelines of the Regenerative Organic Alliance. We are proud to have obtained the certification and to be part of this movement.

The implementation of regenerative practices is based on three main pillars: soil health, animal welfare and social equity.

The implementation of regenerative practices is based on three main pillars: soil health, animal welfare and social equity. The certification has three levels, bronze, silver, and gold, and requires members to improve with them over the years to maintain certification. “With ROC, we seek to continue to develop our sustainability focus, but now with a greater focus on evolving the company’s organic practices towards a more proactive approach to the amount of life and organic matter in our soil, as well as on the sequestration of the atmospheric carbon in the ground”, explains Sergio Borquez, son of Pablo and executive vice president of the company.

This is a big step in the way agriculture is done in Mexico and this achievement reaffirms Campos Borquez’s commitment to being a responsible agricultural company.

Campos Borquez has a foundation that has built and operates four community centers with development programs reaching over 70,000 users per year.

“While we have always strived to nurture the ecosystems and communities we work on, this certification helps us take our mission to another level. It provides an instrument for like-minded organizations and consumers to connect commercially while serving as a guideline for all members of our organization to uphold the highest standards of sustainable practices. We have seen through our nearly 10-year partnership with Fair Trade how certifications can increase our reach and play an important role in our company culture.

Campos Borquez has a foundation that has built and operates four community centers with development programs reaching over 70,000 users per year. These programs range from recreational activities to vocational training, scholarships, crafts, arts, and family therapy, among others. With Fair Trade, they were able to penetrate deeper into social programs within the community of their workers through an empowerment-based system that led them to do amazing projects like building a supply system water for a town of more than 300 houses. ROC opens new horizons in this quest towards a healthy and sustainable food supply.
