Northeast has potential to be country’s ‘organic food basket’: President Murmu

Kohima: As President of IndiaDraupadi Murmu, is making her second visit to the Northeast in less than a month, she shares her vision of making the region the “organic breadbasket” of the country.

The president, who arrived in Nagaland on Wednesday afternoon, said the state has a lot to offer when it comes to agriculture and agricultural products.

Speaking at the civic reception held in Kohima, Murmu said, “70% of agricultural practices in Nagaland are traditional and organic. Indeed, the entire Northeast has the potential to become the country’s organic food basket.

She goes on to say that good quality agri-food and horticultural products from Nagaland are in high demand in the market and was pleased that three agri-food products – Naga tree tomato, Naga cucumber and Naga Mircha – are labeled GI.

She pointed out that the opening of “Naturally Nagaland” outlets by the state government has provided a new platform for local entrepreneurs, farmers and weavers to sell traditional handicrafts and looms, shawls Naga and varieties of organic products.

Murmu is on a four-day tour of three northeastern states – Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim. Her visit to the region, she said, highlights the new national commitment to the people of the region.
