ORGANIC. Food sovereignty. The real prices.

For the next edition of the world’s leading organic food, February 14 to 17, 2023the BIOFACH Congress will focus on “BIO. Food sovereignty. The real prices”. After the unique summer edition of BIOFACH and VIVANESS in July 2022, in February 2023 the international organic food and natural and organic cosmetics community will meet again in person to kick off the year at the Nuremberg exhibition grounds. The BIOFACH Congress will focus on two key questions: how do organic products contribute to food security and sovereignty, and how “real prices” – prices that include ecological after-costs – pave the way for the necessary transformation in the food and grocery industry?

Rising energy and food prices show how fatal it is to depend on fossil fuel-based fertilizers. Meat production in the global north is not suited to the available grazing area and also contributes to increasing hunger in the south – that’s why we need to start raising livestock based on space available. Planting coffee or cocoa in agroforestry systems demonstrates the full potential of organic techniques to actively protect the climate. Moreover, supply chains that are too long, and therefore particularly vulnerable to disruption in times of crisis, prove how important it is to have stable regional value chains.

Real prices can address market failures and facilitate transformation

Ninety billion euros per year* – agriculture in Germany causes so much damage to the general interest that does not affect the price of foodstuffs. This is the result of a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the final report of the Commission on the Future of Agriculture (ZKL) of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). . The cost represents several times the added value of the sector. The organic food industry can avoid doing most of this damage because it does business in a way that protects resources.

The disruptions caused by the COVID-19 crisis, the impact of the war against Ukraine, the energy crisis, the consequences of the climate crisis and the extinction of species – all of this is exacerbating social and economic tensions around the world. entire. But organic products make the food supply more secure, thanks to their closed-loop economy, less dependence on external inputs and strong regional value chains. By operating in a way that conserves resources, organic practices enhance biodiversity, improve soil fertility and protect the climate, producing resilient cropping systems and food sovereignty.

The main theme of the BIOFACH Congress is organized annually jointly by IFOAM – Organics International, the Federation of the Organic Food Industry (BÖLW) and BIOFACH.
